Seeing my baby son was in undies and
I had no nappy bag to lug around, the lady had exclaimed to me:
"Your baby is out of nappies
already? But that's just so great for the environment! You should help more
people know how to do this nappy free thing!"
She was talking about an ancient,
natural way of caring for your baby's hygiene needs that is as gentle on the
environment as possible - called Elimination Communication (EC), Infant Potty
Training and an alternative to toilet training.
Baby pottying, or helping your
baby to go to the toilet and use a baby potty from their early days is a
wonderful practice that reduces the impact of global warming and pollution on
the Earth.
At the same time it enhances the
parent - baby bond and communication. It is a local effort we can
all do now and then as parents - reduce our nappy use in small ways.
We are all living on one Earth, one living planet,
and our global environment needs us all to help protect it. Even our babies can
help us! Start small - start with baby steps! One less nappy at a time will reap
HUGE rewards for our future.
Consider becoming PART TIME NAPPY
FREE to ease the burden of nappy use on the Earth. You can ease into it...
Becoming Part Time Nappy Free is a personal initiative that YOU can do with your
baby to significantly reduce the number of pollution causing nappies that are
dumped into landfills. You CAN do it, and gradually use fewer nappies each day
over time... it isn't a 'quick fix', you will learn with your baby, and have a
wonderful time as you enhance your understanding and relationship with each
other.
We all want to leave a healthy
planet for future generations.
It is clear that humans are the main cause of the
rapidly increasing greenhouse effect. Our
world is now showing and feeling the effects of global warming, it can be quite
scary and seem like we are powerless as individuals to do anything to slow the
climate change. But, we can do something; many things at the personal level that
will collectively make a difference.
To stop global warming so that the rise in
temperature does not go above the 2 degrees that scientists say will lead to
catastrophic crop failures, water shortages, mass extinctions of our
biodiversity and the displacement of millions of people due to ecological
crises, we are all beginning to collectively ask ourselves this question:
"What can we do to
protect the natural environment, to stop global warming and climate
change?
What can we do as individuals to fight against the impact of
increasing carbon dioxide levels and greenhouse gas emissions?"
or far more simply:
How can you help the Earth
with your nappy choices?
|
The answer is: Heaps!
Help save the environment with your
baby - as a team.
- your baby can help you - in
fact, they'll show you how!
Why not start with the new generation? Our babies
are tremendous contributors of waste to the environment, and this is because we
are taught to put our babies in nappies full time for several years - the
hospital put my son in a nappy so soon is was ridiculous - they barely pass
anything for the first day!
It's really shocking to consider the volumes of
waste that can be left, rotting in dumps long after our babies have grown. I'm
sure you've read, as I have, that every disposable nappy ever used is still
sitting somewhere rotting in a dump, and will be there for possibly hundreds
more years! That flied in the face of my environmental awareness, so I looked
for another way. In learning about using cloth nappies, (which are 2.5 times
less damaging to the environment than disposables), I found out about the
concept of EC through a site called "Infant Potty Training" by Laurie Boucke,
who re-introduced the concept to the 'developed' countries 20 years ago. I was
hooked - I knew that was the answer was for me!
The impact of disposable
nappies on the environment is actually quite significant if they are the third
largest contributor to waste in landfills.
BUT you CAN do something to
reduce, even minimize that amount of diapers - learn a spot of EC! Just as
disposables make such a significant impact on the amount of waste generated by a
tiny infant, so too, learning EC has an equally HUGE potential to make a
difference. Imagine even a small reduction in the
number of disposables each child used?
That would be mountains of waste
prevented from going into the landfills and off-gassing for years... This is
called 'mitigation' -preventing the CO2 from being released in the first place -
it is the first line of
defence we have against global warming.
And it is something we can do at home, WITH our babies! Wow.
Think about it -

You'll be helping the environment
starting at the
bottom!
If you are reading this page, you have an open mind to
considering alternative ways of reducing the amount of carbon, and so reducing
the 'carbon footprint' of your actions on our environment. That is just
sensational. Learning about the ancient, truly environmentally conscious way of
caring for your baby's hygiene needs is a great way to get started in doing this
with your baby.
Protect
the earth and have a clean
and dry baby!
Our earth was polluted by humans, and protecting
the environment is something we need to do together. What a way to help save the
environment - by minimising your baby's ecological footprint and having
carbon neutral days!
Discover how to have 'reduced
carbon' days, 'carbon neutral' days, even go on a 'carbon fast'
by using fewer nappies!
That's right - EC is not something you HAVE to do
all the time - you won't be out of nappies all the time - in fact definitely
not! You'll need to build your confidence and knowledge and your baby will grow
into that level of nappy-freedom in time with practice. This will inevitably
happen and THEN you'll realise how NORMAL it is to do EC with your children, and
will be unable to go back to the full-time use of nappies ever again!
You'll be using nappies part time in a shorter
period of time than you might expect. Nappies are a helpful tool for learning to
practice EC (that is what nappies are for - protecting you and your surfaces
from accidents). We used disposable nappies, cloth nappies and then the fabulous
"EC'ing" alternatives that you'll be introduced to soon as you keep learning
about this topic.
You'll start catching wees often enough that your
use of nappies will decrease and you will gain an increased understanding of
your baby while saving a bit of your hard-earned money for a rainy day. (Or
perhaps a relaxing facial - they are nice.)
I have read in several sources that
each baby contributes over two tonnes of polluting waste to landfills if
fully nappied in disposables.
I'll bet you'd like to know how to reduce THAT number for
your baby!
The effects on the environment of all the waste was a
concern of mine, and luckily I learnt about EC in time and discovered I could
learn to gradually reduce the number of nappies we used on our newborn son over
two or three months until they were something we used only part time - when we
went out or to the movies or friends houses.
Did EC reduce the 'carbon impact' or
'carbon footprint' of our baby?
It certainly did. We saved THOUSANDS of dollars and avoided
THOUSANDS of nappy changes for a quick potty break - cuddle, swirl and flush
away into the sewerage system just like all the rest of the household waste -
treated and returned to the environment safely, rather than rotting in dumps and
contributing potentially to groundwater contamination and the pollution of the
environment.
Within months we were using nappies
part time, casually, often not at all at home. Really - if I can do it, so can
you!
Within a few months we were only using washable EC undies
(like training pants but better) and these were only wet, so went in the regular
washing load. Yes, EC is not a perfect process, there will be accidents, but
they can be minimised in terms of environmental impact too.
Modern Cloth Nappies are
an amazing 'new' tool, and the
EC
versions of nappies are just the BEST for combining nappies and EC with
convenience, ease of potty breaks, maximum awareness benefits for parent and
baby, and protection as well!
ANY reduction in the number of
nappies you need to buy, use and dispose of (or wash) is a wonderful gift to our
planet Earth, and you will smile every time!

What are some of the environmental
benefits of learning to practice your EC skills so that your baby is nappy free
part time?
-
Less pollution from chemicals in nappies, the
manufacturing process, packaging, transportation, disposal etc
-
Less exposure of live viruses such as the Polio vaccine
in landfills which can contaminate the environment.
-
Less time in nappies means - less chemical exposure,
waste load on the environment
-
Less exposure to waste by-products urea and ammonia
that are a main cause of nappy rash.
-
less exposure to chemicals in wipes, creams etc that
baby may be sensitive to.
-
Less exposure of baby to chemicals in creams, medicated
nappy rash lotions and antibiotics for severe nappy rashes.
And another six benefits are:
-
Less exposure to powders that may exacerbate breathing
in sensitive babies.
-
Less impact of cloth washing, less detergents, less
water use.
-
Less energy to purchase, transport and dispose of
nappies.
-
Less energy to wash cloth nappies (though they use 2.5
times less than disposables anyway)
-
less time in a nappy = less packaging, bulk in bins,
nappy bags etc.
-

the concept of Elimination Communication? To start using nappies more part-time?

You will receive 'The 7 Secrets to Developing Your
Nappy-Free Confidence', which is about building your confidence, (something
that is at the core of learning something new), building your knowledge and
preparing you so that becoming part time nappy-free is something you just
add to your baby care routine like it is something you have always done. You'll
use nappies as a tool, not a necessity.
I hope you'll consider signing up in a moment, at the
bottom of this page.
NB: This three week mini course in
EC is completely FREE!
It's not about some amazing 3 or 7 step plan to nappy
freedom, it will introduce you to another way of looking at nappies and toilet
learning. A way that is gradual, holistic and grows with you and your child, so
that independence comes naturally and the transition empowers you as a parent,
rather than stressing you out as the time for 'toilet training' starts
approaching!
Elimination Communication is
something you start at home.
You ease into the practice part time with your baby leading
the way, using nappies as full-time backup at first. You offer a potty break at
nappy changes, particularly if your baby has a dry nappy when you happen to
check it, and then, Hooray! You 'catch' your first wee, start skipping the odd
nappy, and begin doing your little bit for the future environment your baby will
live in.
Did you know, that in North America alone, the nappy
industry is worth an estimated 7 BILLION dollars a year? That's a lot of nappy
changing, that's a lot of manufacturing, packaging, transportation, advertising
and most of all - that's a lot of waste!
Nappy companies, who used to make products for toddlers up
to two, are now making products for children up to five and seven, and even
later for night-time wetting problems. Children are now in nappies longer than
ever before in history in the 'developed' countries, while children in the rest
of the world are largely out of nappies around their first birthdays, and using
them in a casual way, rather than 24 hours a day!
You can learn to use nappies more
casually by developing your confidence in practicing EC, in becoming part time
nappy free.
Even a generation ago, the majority of toddlers were
beginning to move out of nappies at eighteen months. Now, the majority of
children don't do this until they are nearly three. Something is out of balance.
In my 7 Secrets you will see how common this knowledge was
even a generation ago! It has been largely lost, but can now be regained. I can
help you to do this!

It's helpful to learn about EC in little bits of
information, as most of this instinctual knowledge has been lost from the
community with the widespread use of the convenient disposable nappy. Just as we
like to learn about lots of little ways we can help the environment, gradually
adjusting our lifestyles, we can learn about EC like that too, and that's what
my free guide is all about - building your awareness of what it is like to do
infant or baby pottying.
In the 7 Secrets you will learn how your daily nappy-free
time is an avenue to learning about EC with your baby - an easy way to start
building your nappy-free confidence.
How
do you boost your confidence in having your baby nappy-free more often so that
you can significantly reduce your household baby related carbon impact?
By discovering learn how parents fit EC into their busy
lives part time - see if the simple attitudes, approaches and strategies are
things that YOU can do - I am certain they are!
P.S. You know, it's quite common for parents practicing EC
to achieve massive drops in their use of nappies - so that within months they
really ARE using nappies casually, as a tool, a backup aid in their parenting,
as their babies are becoming more continent and communicative all the time.
Every 6-8 weeks you'll realise big changes have occurred.
Sure sometimes you'll need to rely more on nappies again, but that is common
too, and with the right background knowledge you'll recognise these stages for
what they are, developmentally normal, and cruise on with no worries, calm and
relaxed as you help your baby to toilet independence in a natural way...
