Wearing Your Baby Gives You Extra Freedom While Keeping Your Baby Close and
Meeting their 'In-Arms' Needs, at All Ages From Newborn To Toddler...
Did You Know You Can Use Your Baby Wearing Time To Reduce
Your Need For Nappies?
Yes, it's true - baby wearing is a key way parents practicing EC develop
their 'potty senses' to reduce their need for nappies.
As
I write this my newborn Jett is sleeping on my back with no nappy on, braces and
all - as he has Talipes and is in a foot brace. He is in a wrap - a simple
length of cheesecloth, a cheap 'entry-level' wrap.
(I got his Dad to take a quick photo...)
Have I got some sort of surreal connection to have him nappy free
back there as I scribble in my note book, totally confident I will not be weed
on?
No! ...Well, yes, we do have a sweet bond, (gush, gush,
baby gush!) ... but you can learn to do this too - and
it is far easier than you might think.
Don't be intimidated by the thought of going 'nappy free' when practicing
elimination communication - be part time nappy free and develop your confidence.
Catch a poo and get the thrill of skipping that first nappy change - and catch
the "EC" bug...
Jett, like many babies who are having EC experiences, often sleep dry,
rousing or waking to have a widdle. So, when he starts to wriggle, I take him
down and offer him a wee-break held safely in my arms, whispering 'sss pss' in
his sweet little ear. He does a big wee.
GET
A RING SLING!
My favourite style of sling for practicing my EC connection
is a ring sling. It is adjustable, holds baby snug against your hip so it is
easy to 'feel' when they need to go, and you can kiss their head so easily!
This is called using a 'Prime Time' or a 'Timing Opportunity' to communicate
with your little baby about their elimination needs.
You can discover how to do this too - to tune into your 'Baby Radar' to use
fewer nappies overall - perhaps not everyday, but often enough that slinging
time can become nappy-free time.
You know how lots of cultures have a long tradition of baby
wearing? They wear their babies to keep them off the ground, to keep them safe,
close, for convenience, practicality and for sleeping, soothing and helping them
to become part of the society from their earliest days.
Well,
another intrinsic benefit of baby wearing is that you can use it as a tool to
reduce your reliance on nappies, instead depending on the bond between you, your
understanding of your baby to help them stay clean and dry.
Here are 7 insights into Baby Wearing and Part Time Elimination
Communication:
- Your baby will wee less often when they are upright in
a baby carrier.
- Your baby will signal more clearly when 'on' you - an
instinct not to wee on Mum perhaps?
- Your baby is close to you so your physical connection is
'louder' and so you can pick up on the subtle messages from your
baby to reinforce your desire to help them stay clean and dry.
- Baby is close, so you can use all your EC 'tools' while
baby wearing to communicate about 'potty needs' - such as eye contact,
language, baby signing and gestures from baby to reduce your need for
nappies.
- You can sense the 'chi pee' - an intuitive signal that
your baby needs to 'go' - and let me tell you it is a mind-blowing
phenomenon to experience!
- When wearing your baby, you can listen with your body
to their non verbal communication.
- Carriers that hold your baby's abdomen close to your body
amplify your awareness of your baby's needs - like a Ring Sling or soft back
carrier.

article about how important it is to pass the baby around to other carers
for one's own balance is one I read before Maven was even born, when I was
